ProhibitionThe amendment of prohibiting alcohol was called The Volstead Act, which was added to the constitution during 1919 and put in play on January 17th, 1920. There were 3 main reasons why alcohol was prohibited in America: (1) The congressmen wanted to eliminate drunkenness of men and abuse in families, (2) They wanted to remove saloons to reduce numbers of crimes like gambling, (3) Finally, they wanted to reduce work-related accidents due to drunkenness. Unfortunately, this amendment didn't quite work as well as was predicted. A report that was taken during the prohibition period actually showed that urban cities did not take this amendment seriously, when rural areas did take it seriously. This unfortunately lead to the opposite of what was expected to happen. It lead to more crimes, gambling, prostitution and actually more alcohol was being consumed illegally that it was being consumed prior to prohibition. Prohibition continued for approximately 13 years until the amendment was repealed in 1933.
